Welcome to the first of a very special December feature on my blog, where every day up until Christmas some of my favourite authors will be sharing what they love most about the festive season, including their favourite films, food, music, presents, memories, books…Plus much more!
So if you love Christmas or are feeling decidedly Scrooge-like then I guarantee you’ll be ready to deck the halls after reading some of these heart warming pieces.
Grab a mince pie, stick some Bing Crosby on the stereo, sit back and enjoy…
I’m thrilled to start off this feature with the fantastic Margaret James.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow…
Thank you for inviting me to be a guest on your blog, Holly. It’s great to be here!
What do I love best about Christmas? Well, I know it’s cold and it’s wet and it gets in your boots and down your neck and it makes driving a nightmare, but I just love snow. The pure beauty of it, the icy whiteness, the fairies-dancing effect when it’s falling in big, fat flakes – I think it’s just magical.
We don’t get much snow in Devon, which is where I live and hope to stay for the rest of my life, but occasionally we’re treated to a total white-out. Here’s a picture of the youngest member of my family making the most of it.
If I can’t have real snow, I make some. It’s always been my job to bake and decorate the family Christmas cake, and every year I choose a snowy theme. Here’s this year’s cake, all ready to be enjoyed, even by those fussy few who will eat only the icing!
My latest novel is called Magic Sometimes Happens and is set partly in Minnesota, one of the most northerly states in the USA, where they have really severe winters every single year. If you’ve seen the movie Fargo you’ll know what I mean.
I don’t know if I’d really want to live in a place where snow can sometimes be piled high for half the year – you can have too much of a good thing! But one day I’ll definitely spend Christmas in Minnesota myself.
A huge Christmassy thank you to Margaret for taking part. ♥
Margaret James has been a member of the RNA for 22 years. She has written thirteen published novels, many short stories, and she also teaches creative writing for the London School of Journalism. Margaret’s first novel was A Touch of Earth, a family saga set in Herefordshire where she was born and grew up, and her most recent is The Penny Bangle, set in Dorset and published by Robert Hale. But her personal favourite among her novels is Elegy for a Queen, published by Solidus, a small independent which has a varied and fascinating list. Margaret now lives in Devon, which she loves.
Your cake looks beautiful and made me want to put the kettle on and cut a big slice!

I really enjoyed reading this, Margaret, and I love idea for the festive posts, Holly! So nice to have something to kick off the countdown to Christmas! I completely agree about the beauty of snow, in spite of the practical problems associated with it!

You are so organised, having your cake already made, Margaret. Massive envy! P.S. I LOATHE snow! Happily, in South Oxfordshire, where I live, there’s seldom much of it.
