Festive Feature

Many thanks for inviting me on to your blog to chat about Christmas. Not long to go now.

What do I love best about Christmas? I’m a sucker for the school shows. As a parent I grant myself full license to well up at Silent Night and Little Donkey, as I watch my children perform, and as a child, I was right there, centre stage, wearing tinsel as a scarf and a crepe paper waistcoat, reciting T’was the Night Before Christmas.

My secondary school held two parties– one in the afternoon and one in the evening – for the local retirement homes. I never missed an opportunity to perform.

Both my children are musical – my dancing daughter plays the piano and is teaching herself acoustic guitar, and my son plays the piano and the electric guitar. Both will perform to an audience. My daughter goes about her business quietly and with grace, but my son is very much like his mother. We’ll perform to the cats if that’s what’s on offer.

I’m looking forward to this year’s school concert, knowing my son will be playing his guitar. His tutor lets him loose with Smoke on the Water from time-to-time. I wonder what carol will have the James Junior rock-spin on it this year …

A rockin’ big thank you to Laura for taking part.

Follow Me Follow YouPossessing little in the way of domestic skills, and with an insatiable hunger to write, Laura E. James found a much better use than cooking, for the family kitchen. Tucked neatly in one corner is her very small, but very tidy desk from where she produces issue-driven romantic novels, short stories, and flash fiction. She considers her legendary affair with stationery, the urge to smell new books, and her mum’s love of reading as the catalysts for writing.

A long-serving wife, and a mother of two outspoken children, Laura is constantly amazed by the question, ‘Are there any plans for tea?’

Living in and enjoying the inspirational county of Dorset, Laura is a graduate of the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s New Writers’ Scheme, a member of her local writing group, Off The Cuff, and one eighth of The Romaniacs.

Her debut novel, Truth or Dare? is published by award-winning Choc Lit and her new paperback, Follow Me Follow You is out now.

  1. Laughing here because I’d go a very long way to avoid school shows and performing in public (heck, I live almost off the edge of the British Isles!) but good luck to you and yours! Have a very merry musical Christmas, Laura!

  2. Great post, Laura – I’m like Chris, not big on performing, but my kids both love music and I’ll think of you and yours as the jazzed up carols resound in our house! Hope you all have a wonderful time. x

  3. Thank you, Angela. So pleased you’re enjoying Follow Me Follow You 🙂
Clare – I know I’ve told this story before, but my mum used to joke she couldn’t take me into a jewellery shop in case I performed under the spotlights 😀
