Welcome to a very special Festive Feature on my blog, where every day up until Christmas some of my favourite authors will be sharing what they love most about the festive season, including their favourite films, food, music, presents, memories, books…Plus much more!
Well, we’re nearly there now!
One day to go and I’m delighted to welcome the fantastic Carys Jones to my blog for my last but one Festive Feature, as she talks about her favourite part of Christmas…the night before…
Twas the Night Before Christmas
I’ve always loved Christmas Eve. You can feel the magical anticipation in the air and the world somehow grows still and quiet before the chaotic present unwrapping and turkey consumption of the following big day.
When I was little my Mum would always read The Night Before Christmas to me just before I went to sleep. I can still remember the story by heart. I loved the alliteration and the descriptions of the house being calm and resting before Santa Claus arrives. I had a hardback copy of the story. The cover was the brightest red and I loved it dearly. Reading was a big part of my childhood and Christmas was no exception.
But now that I’m all grown up (scary as that is) I need to start making new Christmas traditions. Since Christmas Day is spent with my family, my husband and I use Christmas Eve to celebrate the festive season in our own silly way. We spend the whole day in our onesies sat on our sofa with our dog Rollo drinking hot chocolate and watching a marathon of Christmas films. My favourites of which are The Muppets Christmas Carol and Nightmare Before Christmas. Then as the day draws to a close I like to track Santa’s progress across the world online and settle down to read A Christmas Carol.
Anyone who knows me can attest to what a big kid I am. I adore Christmas. I love decorating the tree, listening to my Michael Buble album and snuggling up in front of the TV to watch something festive.
Just before midnight, as my husband goes up to bed, I always steal away to my bookshelf, to my beloved shiny red copy of The Night Before Christmas because even at twenty five (ish) I can’t resist peeking in at the first pages and those iconic opening lines. For me, that story will always be Christmas strung together in beautiful poetic prose. When I read it I’m transported back to the house I grew up in and filled with the abundant joy and excitement of knowing that soon Santa will arrive and fill my stocking with beautifully wrapped presents.
Even though things change and people grow up and take on new traditions, the magic for me has never left and I hope it never will.
A massive Christmassy thank you to Carys Jones for contributing. ♥
Carys Jones loves nothing more than to write and create stories which ignite the reader’s imagination. Based in Shropshire, England, Carys lives with her husband, two guinea pigs and her adored canine companion Rollo.
When she’s not writing, Carys likes to indulge her inner geek by watching science-fiction films or playing video games.
She lists John Green, Jodi Picoult and Virginia Andrews as her favorite authors and draws inspiration for her own work from anything and everything.
To Carys, there is no greater feeling then when you lose yourself in a great story and it is that feeling of ultimate escapism which she tries to bring to her books.
