Is it a break? Or is it a blip? Liv and Adam are in love. Liv and Adam are supposed to be getting engaged. Until Adam accidentally suggests they take a break. And Liv starts thinking …Friends, family and bystanders all have an opinion and one complication leads to another as Adam and Liv try to muddle through in this hilarious, heartwarming comedy. Are they split up – or are they on a break? What exactly are they allowed to get away with? And, most importantly, what do Liv and Adam really want?
Everything is going well for Liv and Adam. They are just reaching the end their dream holiday in Mexico…The thing is Adam is about to propose. Couldn’t get more perfect, right? Well, not exactly. You see Liv KNOWS that Adam is about to propose. In fact she’s getting a teensy bit peeved with waiting – would he just do it already!?
But somewhere along the line things start to go wrong. Dramatically wrong. And before Liv or Adam know what’s going on they find themselves going from ‘nearly engaged’ to *shudder* on a break…
So what exactly went so wrong? Why can the couple not find the words they need to communicate? How is it that the gap between them is suddenly increasing? Can they find their way back from the rather messy situation that they have found themselves in?
There are some things in life that warrant huge excitement. There are the standard things like Christmases, Birthdays and knowing you have an extra-large slab of chocolate cake at home in the fridge. There’s also that feeling of butterflies-in-your-stomach that you get when you have a BRAND NEW LINDSEY KELK NOVEL to read. This feels like Christmas/Birthday/Chocolate Cake combined.
The thing that I loved most about the stories that Lindsey creates is just how relatable they are. She musters up frighteningly realistic situations that anyone could find themselves in and she manages to inject some all-important humour into proceedings, creating comedy gold in the process.
The things that happen to Liv and Adam will undoubtedly ring true with couples everywhere. The insecurities, the misunderstandings, the lack of communication. You are bound to see some of yourself in the characters in this story and will be both nodding your head in recognition and sympathising.
The story is told in alternating chapters from both Liv and Adam’s viewpoint. I thought this was a really effective format, as I wrongly assumed that we’d be hearing Liv’s side of the story but not necessarily Adam’s. Whilst this is a good thing in so far as you get to bond with and understand both characters to a greater degree, I also found myself getting incredibly frustrated at both characters because I knew what was really going on. (BANG. HEADS. TOGETHER.)
The plotline is also a cracker. It will genuinely draw in your attention as you become immersed in proceedings and find yourself truly caring about the characters in the story and what is going to happen to them. (Apart from Chris. GAHHH. He certainly did evoke emotion in me but it was mainly just anger…) There are twists and turns aplenty with a solid, strong story at the heart which will make you laugh, cry and feel all warm and glow-y inside.
Lindsey’s writing is on top-form as ever. The more of her books I read, I find myself falling just that little bit more in love with her as an author and now I can confess I am properly full-blown head over heels. She’s just such a fresh, funny and smart writer. The one-liners she comes up with are absolutely ace and she has this knack of making you feel as though you’re sat with your best friend having a natter rather than even reading a book. She is fantastic at taking you away from the problems in your own life for an hour or two. You can’t help but forget yourself when you’re reading a Lindsey Kelk novel (although it can be a tad embarrassing when you starting chuckling to yourself in public) But I’ll forgive Lindsey for that. In fact, I think I’d forgive her anything, as long as she supplies me with books of this calibre at regular intervals…(Deal, Lindsey!?)
A huge thank you to Felicity at Harper for the opportunity to review We Were On a Break & for having me on the official blog tour.
Bestselling British author based in Los Angeles. Lover of books, watcher of wrestling, wearer of lipstick. Karaoke enthusiast and cat wrangler. Lindsey is the author of twelve novels, including the bestselling I Heart series, About a Girl, The Single Girl’s To-Do List and Always the Bridesmaid.
This sounds just brilliant! I love it when an author manages to immerse me in a world and characters’ lives so fast I don’t even realize 🙂 Breaks are tough but can give us so much good material. I’m adding this to my reading list!
