Reenie Silver is awesome! An early review of my book called Reenie a ‘badass’ – and this absolutely sums her up. Reenie is totally unique, the former lead singer of 1950s group The Silver Five, whose story and potential reunion form the heart of Searching for a Silver Lining. Quite simply, I adored writing Reenie. She appeared on the page in the first draft as she does in the finished book, in a blaze of scarlet and glory. I completely fell in love with her character as I was writing and to be honest she seemed to write most of her scenes herself.
Reenie is a woman who has worked hard to gain her dream. Born Irene Silverman in the slums of Liverpool, she dreamed of finding stardom in the bright lights of London and her entire life has been the result of her all-encompassing ambition. She’s completely unconventional and fiendishly funny, utterly in denial about being a ‘little old lady’ and still believes herself to be a star. But her brassiness hides a terrible secret and a sadness we only discover as Mattie Bell helps her to make amends for the past…
There’s only one choice for my dream actress to play Reenie Silver in the film ofSearching for a Silver Lining: the wonderful Julie Walters. I wrote Reenie with her in mind, imagining her as an eighty-four-year-old version of Rita in Educating Rita. She is the perfect choice, not only because she’s my favourite actress but also because of the sheer range of her acting skills. As Reenie I think she would have you helpless with laughter at her antics, then in tears at the deep sorrow she’s hidden for sixty years of her life. This film has to happen!
